A Comprehensive Guide to the Over and Under (Totals) Market
Learn about the Over and Under betting market, including tips, types and how the market works.
Over and Under betting, known as the totals market, is one of the most popular betting markets at any Sportsbook of an Online Casino, including Housebets.
Just like the Outrights market and match winner bets, over and under betting is also available in almost every sport.
However, unlike the Moneyline and Outrights Market, the Over and Under betting market does not necessarily consider which side is favoured.
But despite this, it is important to understand how this betting option works in all sports. In this piece, we will try to do justice to it.
What is Over and Under (Totals Market)
Over and Under betting, also known as Totals Market, is a type of betting where you bet on the number of points or goals to be scored above or under a particular threshold or number.
This number or threshold often takes the form of a decimal or a whole number depending on the sport.
If the threshold or number holds a decimal form, it means whatever total you are betting on has to be over and under that threshold.
How does the Over and Under ( Totals Market) Work?
It’s important to note that in this type of market, you are simply betting on the total number of points or goals to be scored in a particular game, either by both teams, one team or a player. Note that this total number may take the form of a decimal or whole number, depending on the sport and betting platform.
For example, in football/soccer, if you bet on over 1.5 goals to be scored in a particular match, it means there need to be at least two goals in the match for you to win the bet irrespective of the team that scores the goals.
This means if the match ends 1-0, you lose the bet. But if the match ends 1-1, 2-0 or any other scoreline aside from 1-0, you win the bet.
However, if the threshold/number is a whole number, you can either lose, get your stake money back or win the bet.
For example, if you bet on Over 2 goals to be scored in a particular match it means for you to win the bet, there need to be at least three goals irrespective of which team scores the goals.
But if the match ends in a 1-1 draw or 2-0, the bet will be declared void, meaning you will get your stake money back. However, if the match ends 1-0, you will lose.
This same method applies for over/under 0.5, over 3, over 3.5 and beyond.
However, in a sport like tennis and basketball, the threshold/number is mostly decimal.
For example, in the NBA, you can bet on the Los Angeles Lakers to score 100.5 points against the Boston Celtics.
This simply means you are betting on the Lakers to score above 100 points and at least 101 points. You can only win the bet if the Lakers score 101 points, at least, otherwise you lose the bet, even if the Lakers score only 100 points and win.
If the Lakers score 101 points and lose, you still win the bet because you only bet on the Lakers to score above 100.5 points.
This also applies in tennis where you can only bet above a particular decimal threshold.
Eg: You can bet on Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to play over 18.5 games in total, although you also have to consider the maximum number of sets they can play.
It is important to note that while over and under betting is available in almost every sport, the rules guiding each sport are different.
Types Over and Under Betting Markets at Housebets
Total Scores
Here, you are simply betting on the total number of goals or points to be scored in a particular match, no matter which team scores it.
Eg: Manchester City vs Liverpool- You can bet on the total number of goals in the game to be over 2.5.
This means you are betting on at least three goals to be scored in that game irrespective of which team scores the goal.
If Manchester City beat Liverpool 3-0 or the result is vice-versa, you will win the bet as three goals were scored in the game.
In a sport like American Football, you can bet on totals too. If you bet on over 48.5 points in a match between the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions, and the match ends 24-25, you will also win the bet.
Team Totals
In this type of over and betting bet, you are betting on a team to score below or over a particular number.
Eg: If you bet Manchester City to score over 2.5 goals against Liverpool, it means you are simply betting on Manchester City to score at least three goals whether they win or lose.
You can only win the bet if Manchester City score three goals irrespective of the result. But if the match ends 2-1 in favour of Manchester City, you lose the bet because City only scored two goals even though the game had three goals.
Player Totals
This over and under betting type is mostly found in a team sport and Tennis.
Eg: You can bet on Lebron James to score over 25.5 points for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Boston Celtics.
This means you need to Lebron to score at least 26 points to win the bet irrespective of the final result.
In tennis, you can bet on a player to win a total number of games depending on the maximum number of sets they can play.
Eg: You can bet on Novak Djokovic to win 11.5 games against Andy Murray if it is best of three sets.
Number of Rounds
This is found mostly in individual sports like Tennis, Boxing and MMA. For example, in tennis, you can bet on the total number of sets they can play depending on the event.
In Grand Slam events, it’s always a maximum of five sets and a minimum of three in the men’s game, providing there’s no retirement.
However, outside the Grand Slam events, it is always a minimum of two sets and a best of three sets. In the women’s game, it’s always best of three sets at all events.
Meanwhile, in combat sports, you can also bet on the total number of rounds.
Over/Under Betting Tips
Research: Ensure you do your research on the team, player and game you are betting on. For example, if Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah are likely to be absent when Man City and Liverpool face each other, it may be better to avoid the over market.
History: It’s better to know the history of the head-to-head of the teams you are betting on. Find out if their matchup is always a cagey affair.
Totals: Although there are times you can bet on a particular team’s total, it is better to just bet on totals without rooting/backing any team.
