August ushers in a new football season in Europe’s top leagues
Europe’s top leagues kick off this month, including the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1.
Europe’s top leagues kick off this month, including the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1.
It has been almost three months since the Champions League final drew the curtains on the 2023/2024 football season.
Since then, we have been treated to exciting and thrilling matches on the international stage while the Paris 2024 Olympics is currently keeping us glued to our seats.
Euro 2024 and Copa Ameria 2024 were a delight to watch for fans, while we also witnessed the drama in the 100m finals at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
However, while it has been a fun summer, the attention shifts to the new football season, which kicks off this month.
August is the month that ushers in the new football season, and this year is no different. The excitement is already building up as Europe’s top leagues in less than a week.
Housebets take a look at some of the European leagues starting their season this month and what to expect.
Premier League (Starts August 16)
There is no better place to start than in England, where the biggest football league in the world kicks off on August 15.
The 2024/2025 season starts with Manchester United hosting Fulham at Old Trafford in the season opener on Friday night.
Erik Ten Hag’s men will be looking to build on their disappointing eighth place finish last season and will hope to start with a win against Marco Silva’s side.
Manchester United have made new additions to their squad, with the likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro joining the club.
But despite the additions, the team to beat in this season’s championship remains Manchester City.
The defending champions may not have reinforced their squad, but they are still the favourites to win a fifth consecutive league title under Pep Guardiola.
However, both Arsenal and Liverpool will hope to stop the Cityzens from achieving this unprecedented feat.
Liverpool have a new man in the dugout this season, with Arne Slot named as Jurgen Klopp’s successor.
La Liga (Starts August 15)
Another league to look forward to this season is the Spanish top flight. La Liga kicks off on August 14, with Athletic Bilbao taking on Getafe in the opener.
However, all eyes will be on Barcelona and Real Madrid, the two favourites for the title. Barcelona, under new manager, Hansi Flick, will hope to wrestle the title away from Real Madrid, who have won it the last two seasons.
With youngsters like Lamine Yamal and Pedri in their ranks, Barcelona possess a mixture of youth and experience.
But they will need to be better than a formidable opponent in Real Madrid. Real Madrid, who are also the current European champions, have just made an already strong squad stronger with the addition of Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe’s arrival makes Real Madrid the overwhelming favourite to three-peat but Barcelona will hope to stop that.
Serie A (Starts August 17)
The Italian Serie A kicks off on the same weekend as the Premier League and La Liga. Serie A is arguably the only league where about five teams have an equal shot at the title.
Inter are the team to beat, Napoli, under Antonio Conte, will be eager to prove themselves again after a disastrous title defence last season.
Juventus also have a new manager, Thiago Motta, and will want to make a statement after a disappointing end to last season.
Meanwhile, AC Milan under Paulo Fonseca, will also hope to challenge for the title this season. AS Roma also have an outside shot at the title, but will at least hope to qualify for the Champions League.
Ligue 1 (Starts August 18)
With Kylian Mbappe’s departure, the French top flight has lost its biggest star. Still, it promises to be an exciting season.
Despite losing Mbappe, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are still the team to beat, but it will be interesting to see the tactical battle between Roberto De Zerbi (Olympique Marseille manager) and Luis Enrique (PSG manager). Other teams to watch in the Ligue 1 include Olympique Lyon, Lille and OGC Nice.
Bundesliga (Starts August 23)
The Bundesliga kicks off on August 23 with all eyes on Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich showdown.
Leverkusen ended Bayern’s ten-year dominance last season after winning their first and only league title.
The failure led to Thomas Tuchel’s departure as Bayern’s boss, with Vincent Kompany replacing him.
The Bavaria giants have already signed the likes of Michael Olise as they look to take the league title back from Leverkusen.
Leverkusen start the season with a clash against Borussia Monchengladbach and will be confident in their chances with Xabi Alonso in the dugout.
