All is set to go down at the Australian Open as the first final of the first grand slam final of the year takes place this weekend.
Two weeks after the action kicked off, we are down to the last two players in both the Women’s Singles and Men’s Singles.
In the Women’s Singles final, Aryna Sabalenka will hope to defend her title and win her fourth major when she takes on Madison Keys.
Sabalenka entered the tournament as the woman to beat and has proved that so far, including in the semifinal, where she beat good friend Paula Badosa in straight sets.
As for Keys, she denied fans the chance to see a Sabalenka vs Swiatek final after beating the Polish world no.2 in the semi-final. The American saved a match point to beat Swiatek in three thrilling sets.
However, for the purpose of this piece, we will be focusing on the Men’s singles final which takes place a day after the women’s final.
Jannik Sinner vs Alexander Zverev preview
This year’s Men’s Australian Open Singles final will see World No. 1 Jannik Sinner take on World No. 2 Alexander Zverev.
Like Sabalenka in the women’s draw, Sinner was also the man to beat entering into the tournament. The World No.1 was on a 14-match winning streak coming into the tournament and has extended it to 20 en route to the final.
Aside from a little scare against Tristian Schoolkate and Holger Rune in the second round and fourth round, respectively, it has been smooth sailing for Sinner so far.
The 23-year-old got to the final by dispatching home favourite Alex de Minaur and Ben Shelton in the quarter-final and semi-final respectively.
Even when he is not at his best, like in the match against Shelton, Sinner still finds a way to get the win. The last few months have also been a test of Sinner’s mental resilience, given WADA has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after an independent tribunal cleared him twice despite testing positive for the banned substance clostebol in March 2024.
Nonetheless, Sinner has not let the cloud of a potential two-year ban hang over him. Sinner heads into the final as the favourite and will be hoping to make it 3-0 in grand slam finals after winning his first two last year.
However, he faces a formidable challenge in Zverev. Zverev has also been great in this tournament. The German World No.2 has also had an easy journey to the final, although he dropped a set against Ugo Humbert and Tommy Paul.
The 27-year-old faced his toughest test when he took on Novak Djokovic in the semi-final but did not even have to break a lot of sweat as Djokovic retired after losing the first set. This means Zverev should be fresh and fit for the final.
This final is Zverev’s third chance to finally win a grand slam, having lost his previous final appearances. He was once seen as the heir to the big three’s throne but has been surpassed by newbies Sinner and Alcaraz.
The good news for Zverev is that he has a good head-to-head record against Sinner, leading their matchup 4-2. The German has also won their last two matches on hardcourts, (US Open, 2021 and 2023). The 27-year-old Zverev can also reflect on some red-hot recent form of his own: He has won 16 of his past 17 matches dating back to his title run at November’s Rolex Paris Masters.
