Corner Betting 101 in Football

Corner betting is one of the most popular markets in football or soccer as some countries call the sport.

The market is unlike the other markets we have in the sport. Unlike the moneyline market, corner betting does not have anything to do with the result of the match.

It also has nothing to do with the number of goals scored in a particular match, even if there are no goals from a corner kick.

However, to understand corner betting, it is also important to know what corner kicks mean in football.

What is a Corner Kick?

Corner Kick happens in football when the ball is behind the touchline, where the goalpost is located.

However, for a corner kick to be taken, the ball must have hit the player of the defending team last.

This allows the attacking team to launch the ball into the opposition box with the aim of scoring a goal.

Although you can score directly from a corner kick, most times the idea behind a corner kick is to launch it into the opposition box, hoping one of your teammates connect with it via a legal part of the body.

As we all know, you cannot score with your hand in football, meaning the only way to score from a corner kick is via your head, leg or chest.

What is Corner Betting?

Corner betting as the name suggests is simply betting strictly on corners in a particular football match.

This is not really different from betting on goals, but you are betting strictly on corners here instead of goals.

However, for corners, the result of the match does not really matter because it has no effect on the bet. There are different options in corner betting, though.

Types of Corner Betting

Corner Moneyline

This is similar to betting on the outcome of a match. However, here you are betting on which team will play the most corners instead of the result of the match.

Eg: If Liverpool are playing Arsenal, you can bet on Liverpool to play more corners than Arsenal in the match.

Should Liverpool play more corners than Arsenal in the match, you will win the bet irrespective of the result of the game.

Over/Under

Betting on overs in corner is not different from the totals market in goal betting. However, here, you are strictly betting on corners and not goals.

For example, you can bet on over 7.5 corners in a particular match, meaning you are betting on at least eight corners to be played in the match.

If they play seven corners, you will lose the bet. Meanwhile, you can also bet on under in corner betting.

Eg: If you bet on under 7.5, you are betting on a maximum of seven corners to be played in the match.

Anything over seven corners in the match will see you lose the bet. Over/Under corner betting is also known as Corner Totals.

First/Last Corner

This type of corner betting is like a roll of dice. Here, you are betting on which team will play the first corner of the game.

Eg: In the Premier League clash between Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United, you can bet on Brighton to play the first corner of the game and bet on Manchester United to play the last corner of the game.

In this type of corner betting, stats do not really play a major role, which is why there is not too much difference in odds.

Team Corner Totals

This is also like betting on the number of goals a team will score, but you are betting on corners strictly here.

Eg: You can bet on Manchester United to play over 4.5 corners against Brighton, meaning you are backing Manchester United to play at least five corners.

If Man Utd play less than five corners, you will lose your bet. However, if Man Utd play more than five corners, you will win your bet irrespective of the number of corners played in the match.

You can also decide to bet strictly on one half, meaning you can bet on Man Utd to play over 3.5 corners in the first half.

This means you are backing Man Utd to play over three corners in the first half alone.

Anything other than that will see you lose your bet even if they play over three corners in the whole game.

However, you will win your bet if Manchester United play at least four corners in the first half even if they do not play any other corner again in the second half.

Corner Range

This may look like the totals market but it is not. Here, you are simply betting on a particular team to play corners but within a certain number.

For example, you can bet on Manchester United to play between 3-4 corners against Brighton. Your bet here simply means that you are betting on Manchester United to play a minimum of three corners and a maximum of four corners, meaning anything less than three and anything over four corners will see you lose the bet.

It’s important to note that odds differ from each range. For example, the odds for 3-4 corners will likely be lower to 0-2 corners.

However, it is important to know that there is also a range that has a minimum number but no maximum number.

Eg: You can bet on Brighton to play at least seven corners against Manchester United without worrying about any other thing.

This is different from the totals market because the corner totals market has a .5 decimal threshold.

Corner Betting Tips

There are so many factors that determine if there will be a lot of corners in the game.

  • Firstly, you have to do your research on both teams. Check their previous games and see the number of corners they played. Also, look at their style of football. If they are a possession-based team, there are likely to be few corners. However, if it’s a possession-based team playing against an underdog known for sitting deep, there will likely be a lot of corners.
  • After doing your research, look at the weather conditions and state of the pitch. If it does not favour a smooth-passing game, there are likely going to be corners.
  • Look at the matchups on the two wide areas of the pitch. It’s important to know the wingers on both teams. If both teams have inverted wingers, corners are likely to be few in the game. However, if they have direct wingers, there is a possibility of a high number of corners.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Corner Betting

One of the advantages of corner betting is that the main result of the game has no impact on your bet. It also allows you to bet more on the underdog, giving you more valuable odds.

However, the disadvantage of corner betting is that it is a little bit harder to predict compared to the moneyline market.
