Everything You Need To Know About The New UEFA Champions League

Get to know about the new UEFA Champions League, teams, kick off dates, fixtures and outrights.

The 2024/2025 UEFA Champions League season kicks off next week, but it will have a new look.

Unlike the previous seasons, this year’s Champions League has a different format and more teams.

The previous format saw 32 teams compete in the group stages, with the top two teams qualifying for the round of 16 and the third-placed teams dropping to the Europa League.

The group winners are then paired against the second-placed teams in the round of 16 in a two-legged tie but clubs from the same country cannot be paired against each other.

The winners of the round of 16 then face each other in the quarter-final, but there is no country protection from the quarter-final onward.

However, all these rules (well, most of them) will not apply in this new format of the UEFA Champions League.

What is the new UEFA Champions League?

The new UEFA Champions League will see 36 teams participate instead of the 32 that competed in the previous format.

These 36 teams will also compete in a league phase instead of the group division that was associated with the previous format.

Clubs will no longer face three teams twice but will play eight different teams in a home-and-away format. Each club will play four games at home and four games away.

Also, in this new format, clubs will no longer have the opportunity to drop into the Europa League anymore.

The top eight will qualify for the round of 16 automatically, while teams that finish in 9-24 will face each other in a two-legged playoff tie for a chance to qualify for the round of 16.

As for teams that finish out of the top 24, they will be eliminated from the competition.

What about the draws?

The draw for this season took place last month, with the teams put in different pots.

In the previous format, the champions of the top seven leagues along with the defending champions are put in pot 1.

However, in this new format, only the defending champions are automatically in pot 1. The rest of the seven clubs in pot 1 are selected based on their coefficients.

This applies to pot 2, pot 3 and pot 4 too. But where it gets tricky is that, unlike the last format, pot 1 clubs are no longer guaranteed easy draws as each team will play two teams from each pot, meaning favourites will get to face each other right from the league stage.

The draw last month set up some intriguing clashes, including Liverpool vs Real Madrid, Arsenal vs Inter Milan, and Manchester City vs Paris Saint-Germain among many others.
