This year’s off-season is like no other, as the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States is set to dominate the screens and take our attention.
In years when there are no major international tournaments, the off-season is always the perfect time to rest and relax after a rigorous football season. However, that will not be the case for a couple of players and teams this year due to the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup.
While some players will still get to enjoy a well-deserved post-season break, those representing the 32 teams at the Club World Cup will not have a break until at least the end of June.
The next 30 days will indeed be full of non-stop football action as the teams battle for the Club World Cup.
Remember, you can bet on all the Club World Cup games at Housebets. Some of the world’s best teams will be in action, and you can bet on all their games.
Understanding the new FIFA Club World Cup
Before you start placing your bets on the Club World Cup games at Housebets, it is important to understand everything about the tournament.
While this might look like a new tournament FIFA just introduced, that is not the case. In fact, the Club World Cup has been in existence since 2000, although the tournament did not take place between 2001-2004.
From 2005, the tournament became an annual competition, taking place in December, with just the reigning champions from six continents (Europe, Asia, South America, North America, Africa and Oceania) participating.
However, in 2022, the world football governing body, FIFA, under the leadership of Gianni Infantino, announced that the competition would expand to 32 teams and would be played every four years, starting this year.
This year’s edition will be the first 32-team FIFA Club World Cup, with the next edition set for 2029.
How does the new FIFA Club World Cup format work?
Well, this format is similar to the 32-team FIFA World Cup, which is the biggest sporting competition in the world.
It will feature three matchdays in the group stage, the second round, the quarter-final, the semi-final and the final. However, unlike the FIFA World Cup, there will not be a third-place match.
The top two from each group will qualify for the round of 16, which is the beginning of the knockout stage.
How are the slots allocated?
Like every other FIFA competition, the slots are shared across each of the six continents represented.
As expected, Europe (UEFA) has the most teams, with 12, followed by South America (CONMEBOL) with 6. Asia (AFC), Africa (CAF) both have four representatives, while North and Central America (Concacaf) have five teams, but that is because the US received an additional slot as tournament hosts. Meanwhile, one team from Oceania completes the 32-team tournament.
FIFA Club World Cup Teams
AFC: Al Hilal, Urawa Red Diamonds, Al Ain, Ulsan HD
CAF: Al Ahly, Wydad Casablanca, Esperance de Tunis, Mamelodi Sundowns
CONCACAF:Monterrey, Seattle Sounders, Los Angeles FC, Pachuca
CONMEBOL: Palmeiras, Fluminense, Flamengo, Botafogo, River Plate, Boca Juniors
OFC: Auckland City
UEFA: Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, PSG, Inter, Porto, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Red Bull Salzburg
CONCACAF (host): Inter Miami
How did teams qualify?
The first criterion used was to give teams that won their continental competitions between 2021-2024 a slot, meaning half of the teams that qualified for the tournament were champions of their respective continents between 2021-2024.
However, if a club win its continental competition more than once during this period, the slot will be given to the highest-ranked team on the continent during this four-year period.
The rest of the field is determined by the best-performing teams in these continental competitions over the four-year period. For UEFA teams, though, FIFA decided to use a special methodology to determine the teams that qualify since UEFA already has a coefficient ranking.
- 2 points for a win
- 1 point for a draw
- 4 points for qualification for the group stage
- 5 points for qualification for the Round of 16
- 1 point for progress to each stage of the competition thereafter
However, FIFA has limited the number of teams from each country represented to just two unless these countries produced multiple continental champions during this period.
This is why Liverpool, who have a better coefficient than Chelsea, missed out because the Blues won the Champions League in 2021.
Meanwhile, LaLiga champions Barcelona will also not be represented despite having a good coefficient during this period.
While Barcelona have been better than the likes of RB Salzburg and Benfica, they have not performed better than Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid during this period.
With FIFA limiting the number of teams from a country to just two, Barcelona missed out as Atletico Madrid have raked in more points than the Catalan giants over the last four years.
