It has been a busy period for Premier League teams as action continues this weekend, featuring one of the biggest games in the world- Liverpool against Manchester United at Anfield.
Over the years, the holiday period in December and January has always been the busiest period for teams in England, with matches coming thick and fast.
This year is no different, with matches taking place on Boxing Day and last weekend. There is no time to rest for the teams as matchweek 20 takes centre stage this weekend.
The action starts with Tottenham Hotspur against Newcastle in the early kickoff on Saturday, before Chelsea travel to Crystal Palace and Man City host West Ham in the 3 PM kickoffs.
Arsenal’s trip to Brighton rounds up Saturday’s action before Fulham kicks off Sunday’s round of games when they take on Ipswich Town at Craven Cottage.
However, the biggest game of the weekend takes place at Anfield on Sunday as Liverpool host Manchester United, which is our preview game this week.
Liverpool vs Manchester United preview
It has been a season of contrasting two fortunes for the two biggest and most successful clubs in England. While Liverpool are currently at the top of the Premier League table, Man Utd are in lowly 14th place, seven points above the relegation zone.
For Liverpool, it has been a dream season in Arne Slot’s first year as manager. The Reds are on course to win their 20th league title as they sit six points clear at the top with a game in hand.
Liverpool have been nothing but spectacular this season, losing just one game in all competitions- a freak 1-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest.
Slot’s men will go into the clash against their arch-rivals on Sunday full of confidence, which is only the right thing to do. The Reds are on a three-match winning streak, including a five-star performance against West Ham last weekend.
Also, they have a good record against the Red Devils in recent meetings. The Reds have not lost at home in the League to United since 2016.
In fact, they have only conceded once against Man Utd in their last eight league games against them at Anfield.
Liverpool also won the reverse fixture last year, thanks to Luis Diaz’s opener and a brace from Mohamed Salah.
Salah has been arguably the best player in the Premier League this season with 17 goals and 13 assists in 19 games. The Egyptian will relish facing United as he has a good record against them, having both scored more goals (12) and provided more assists (6) against the Red Devils than any other player in Premier League history.
As for United, it does not look good for them and their new coach Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils are on a three-match losing streak in the league, including Monday’s 2-0 home loss to Newcastle. They have lost five of their last six league games and shipped in 18 goals in the whole of December.
And with Liverpool scoring for fun right now, Amorim and his boys will be in for a difficult time at Anfield this Sunday. It does not look good for United as they have not beaten Liverpool at Anfield in their last eight league games (L4, D4).
Also, the Red Devils have won just one of their last 13 league games against Liverpool (L7, D5), a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in August 2022.
However, United can take confidence from their 2-1 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last month, although Pep Guardiola’s men are a shadow of what they used to be.
Liverpool vs Manchester United team news
Both teams have a few injury problems going into the match. Liverpool will be without Joe Gomez, who picked up an injury in the win against West Ham.
However, Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley returned to the team training on Friday. The Reds also have Dominik Szoboszlai back, although Curtis Jones could keep his place in the lineup.
As for United, they will be without Marcus Rashford again, who will miss the match due to an illness. Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Victor Lindelof are still out, but Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte are back from suspension.
Liverpool vs Manchester United betting odds
The odds are firmly in Liverpool’s favour, which is only right. The Reds are priced at 1.31 to win while Man Utd are given an odd of 9.00 to win at Housebets. Over 2.5 goals is priced at 1.40, which is another solid option. However, it is hard to see anything other than a Liverpool win.
