Manchester City take on Manchester United in this weekend’s marquee football clash in Europe’s domestic leagues.

The second Manchester derby of the season headlines a weekend of non-stop football action across the world.

With almost all other sports on break for the festive season, football is one of the few sports that will keep fans entertained during this period.

The action starts today and will continue for the next few days. In Spain, Barcelona and Real Madrid will be in action while Lazio take on Inter Milan in Serie A’s top fixture of the weekend.

However, the marquee fixture for this weekend remains the big clash taking place at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Manchester City vs Manchester United preview

Manchester City and Pep Guardiola are officially in crisis now. The defending Premier League champions are in unfamiliar territory, having won just one of their last ten games in all competitions.

It’s also an unfamiliar situation for Guardiola, who has never found himself in this type of situation since he became a manager.

The question now on everyone’s mind is how the champions get out of the hole they find themselves. The good news for them is that they can start by beating their rivals Man Utd in their Premier League encounter on Sunday.

Guardiola’s men have been a shadow of themselves and they come into this match on the back of a 2-0 loss to Juventus in the Champions League during the week.

But a win against United on Sunday could be the spark they need to reignite their season, even though they are eight points behind leaders, Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

City have a good record against United in recent years, having won five of the last six Manchester derbies in the Premier League. It may also be a good avenue for Erling Haaland, who has been affected by City’s struggles, to pick up again.

Haaland has a good record against United with nine goal involvements (six goals and three assists).

United are also in crisis right now despite the appointment of Ruben Amorim.

Amorim was brought in to turn around the fortunes of United, but the Portuguese tactician is still finding his feet. Although they arrested their slump with a 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League, United have lost their last two league matches, including last weekend’s 3-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Their record against City in the league also does not inspire confidence going into the huge clash on Sunday.

However, United have won their last two games against City, while Amorim beat Pep with his Sporting Lisbon shortly before signing with the Red Devils last month.

Manchester City vs Manchester United Team News

Manchester City will be without a few key players. Rico Lewis will miss the match after picking up a red card in last week’s 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, Rodri (Knee), Oscar Bobb (leg) and Nathan Ake (thigh) will not play again until next year. Manuel Akanji and John Stones are also expected to miss the clash due to injury.

In contrast, Man Utd have no significant absentees except for Luke Shaw, who remains sidelined with a longterm injury.

Manchester City's possible starting lineup:

Ederson; Walker, Dias, Simpson-Pusey, Gvardiol; De Bruyne, Kovacic; Silva, Foden, Nunes; Haaland

Manchester United's possible starting lineup

Onana; Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martinez; Diallo, Ugarte, Mainoo, Dalot; Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund
