The wait is finally over. The 2024/2025 NBA season is here, with tip-off set for October 2023, 2024.
Three months after the Boston Celtics became the most successful franchise in the competition’s history, we are set for another exciting NBA season.
This year’s competition promises to be exciting as there are many teams that will be fighting to take the title away from the Celtics.
There have been some interesting trades during the offseason, with all the teams making major additions to their squad.
It remains to be seen how this trade will play out, but some teams expected to make a deep playoff run.
With that said, we take a look at the favourites for the 2024/2025 NBA season.
Boston Celtics
It is hard to look past the defending champions, to be honest. They have arguably the best squad in the league.
If their starting five are all available, it would be hard for any team to beat the Celtics in a best-of-seven series.
They also have a deep roster, which is not something other teams in the league can say.
While they may not have a big three like the Philadelphia Sixers or the Dallas Mavericks, they have arguably two of the top ten players in the league in Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
Both players also have a point to prove after a difficult summer, which saw Tatum play a few minutes at the Olympics and Brown omitted from the squad.
And with players like Jrue Holiday and Derrick White locking up the opposition’s offence, the only thing that could stop the Celtics is complacency.
The Celtics are priced at 4.10 at Housebets to defend their title successfully, which looks like a good value, considering the core of their squad.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder were the number one seed in the Western Conference last year, racking up more wins than any other team in the division.
But despite their regular season form, they failed to reach the Western Conference finals, losing to the Dallas Mavericks in the semifinal.
But the OKC are expected to make another run this season and they look well primed for it despite the high level of competitiveness in the west.
One of the things that worked against OKC in the playoffs was their lack of size in the perimeter, but they managed to fix the issue during the offseason with the addition of Isaiah Hartenstein and Alex Caruso.
Also, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander giving MVP numbers and Chet Holmgren now fit, OKC will definitely feel confident in their chances of winning the West again and making a deep run in the playoff.
The Thunder unsurprisingly are the second favourite according to the outright odds at Housebets.
New York Knicks
Like the OKC, the New York Knicks will also be looking to make a deep run in the playoffs this year after reaching the semi-final in the Eastern Conference last season.
The Knicks lost to the Indiana Pacers in the semifinal, although their situation was not helped by the fitness level of their star man Jalen Brunson.
However, they are ready to rock and roll again this season and have been tipped as the team with the best chance of stopping the Celtics in the East.
Although the Knicks lost two of their core during the offseason Donte DiVincenzo and Julius Randle, they replaced them with two brilliant players in Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges.
These two additions are as good as they get in the NBA this season and should help the Knicks’ quest.
On paper, their starting five can go toe-to-toe against the Celtics but they may need their bench to help in a best-of-seven-game series. Nonetheless, the Knicks are seen as a legitimate contender this season.
Dallas Mavericks
Last season's losing finalists, the Dallas Mavericks, will hope to go one step further and secure their first NBA title since 2011.
Nobody gave Dallas a chance last week, but they surprised many by going all the way to the finals, losing to the Celtics.
The Mavs finished fifth in the Western Conference and were the underdogs going into the playoffs.
However, they beat the LA Clippers, OKC and Minnesota Timberwolves to get to the finals.
In all of these games, they were the underdog but it did not matter.
The Mavs would not have been able to achieve what they did last season without their star man, Luka Doncic.
Doncic will be crucial once again if the Mavs are to make another run.
Arguably the best player in the league, Doncic will hope to combine well with Kyrie Irving again this season.
The two are seen as one of the greatest backcourt duos of all time.
They will need to replicate the same performance and maybe surpass it if the Mavs are to end their long wait for an NBA title.
The good news for both guys, however, is that they also have help now with the addition of Klay Thompson from the Warriors.
Klay is seen as one of the best three-point shooters of all time and that could help Dallas in their quest.
Also, they still have their core from last season, including Derek Lively II, Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington.
While there is no more Derrick Jones Jr, they have replaced him with perfectly with Naji Marshall.
But despite making the finals last year, Dallas are still seen as underdogs, priced behind Minnesota, Denver Nuggets and OKC in the west.
Aside from the teams mentioned, the LA Lakers, Warriors and Phoenix Suns are seen as outsiders to go all the way.
