It is not every time we get to see North London derbies on a Wednesday night, but that is what we are set to witness this week as Arsenal take on Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners’ clash against Spurs is the highlight of matchweek 21 in the Premier League. After the FA Cup took over the weekend, it’s time for clubs to turn their attention to the league.

There are a lot of exciting matches to watch this matchweek, with games taking place on Tuesday night. Tuesday’s action will see Chelsea host Bournemouth, City travel to Brentford, West Ham take on Fulham while Liverpool are up against Nottingham Forest.

Ideally, Liverpool’s clash against Nottingham Forest is big on paper as just six points separate both sides.

But irrespective of where they are on the table, nothing beats the excitement of the North London derby.

Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur preview

A season that started on a promising note for Arsenal could end in disappointment unless the Gunners pick up their form again, starting with their clash against Spurs.

The Gunners were hoping to win at least a trophy this season but it does not look good currently for them as they are out of the FA Cup and would need a miracle against Newcastle in their Carabao Cup semifinal clash.

This leaves them with the Premier League and Champions League as their only realistic option this season. However, if they are to retain hopes of ending their long wait for a league title, they need to beat Spurs on Wednesday night.

Mikel Arteta’s men are already up against it as they are currently six points behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand. Should Liverpool win at Forest, Arsenal will go into Wednesday’s clash nine points behind.

As a result, they cannot afford to drop points on Wednesday night. The good news for them is that they are the only side yet to lose in the league at home this season and also won the reverse fixture last year.

However, Arteta’s men come into this game on the back of a penalty shootout loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup at the Emirates. They also suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final clash.

This makes the game against Spurs more important than it is. But if they are to arrest their slump, they will need to solve their issues in front of goal. While Arsenal have the best defensive record this season, they have been poor going forward recently.

Nonetheless, Arsenal will feel confident in their chances as they have not lost to Spurs at home in the league since November 2010.

As for Spurs, they have not fared well either. Ange Postecoglou’s men needed extra time to see off  Tamworth in their FA Cup clash on Sunday, while their form in the league is not exciting.

Tottenham are currently 12th on the table having picked up just five points from their last eight games.

Although injuries have not helped Spurs, Postecoglou's refusal to change his all-out attacking style has not helped the Lilywhites either.

Spurs face a difficult game against Arsenal having won just one of the the last eight matches between the two sides, losing the last two in the process.

The Lilywhites have only won one of their last 31 away Premier League games against Arsenal, drawing 12 and losing 18.

Arsenal and Tottenham team news

Arsenal have troubles up front after Gabriel Jesus picked up an injury in the loss to Man Utd on Sunday. According to reports, Jesus has likely suffered an ACL injury, meaning Kai Havertz will lead the line again.

The Gunners will also be without Ethan Nwaneri (muscle), Bukayo Saka (hamstring), Ben White (knee) and Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee), while Riccardo Calafiori is also a serious doubt after missing the FA Cup loss with a muscular injury.

Meanwhile, Spurs have injury problems of their own as they will be without  Destiny Udogie (hamstring), Ben Davies (hamstring), Richarlison (hamstring), Micky van de Ven (hamstring), Guglielmo Vicario (ankle), Wilson Odobert (hamstring), Cristian Romero (thigh) and Rodrigo Bentancur (head) missing out again.
