The weekend is here again and we are set for another time for non-stop football games over the next three days, including Tottenham’s clash against Chelsea.
While other sports are taking a Christmas and New Year break, football games will keep fans occupied over the festive period.
This weekend is the continuation of a marathon of games this December, with games taking place in all of Europe’s domestic leagues.
There are some exciting games this weekend, including Napoli vs Lazio, Atalanta’s win over AC Milan and Barcelona’s clash against Real Betis.
But the biggest game this weekend is the London derby between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.
Tottenham vs Chelsea preview
It has been a frustrating season for Tottenham so far because they have been unable to put on a run of consistent results.
One time they beat Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad, having lost 2-1 at home to Ipswich Town in the precious game week.
That has been the case with Spurs, who come into this match on the back of a 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth in the week.
They also played a 1-1 draw at home to Fulham last weekend, leading to more frustrations for Ange Postecoglou and the fans.
Coming into the season, the objective for Spurs is at least a top-four spot, having missed out last season to Aston Villa.
However, the Lily Whites do not look like a team capable of challenging for the top four right now unless they can start winning games on a bounce.
Postecoglou’s men can start doing that, starting with the match against Chelsea at home this Sunday.
In fairness, Spurs have been good against their big six rivals this season, winning at the home grounds of Man Utd and City, although they lost at home to Arsenal.
Spurs have only struggled against teams they are expected to beat. Nonetheless, they need to get a result against Chelsea this weekend if they are serious about salvaging their top four hopes.
The worrying news for Spurs is that they are winless in their last three games at home in all competitions and have kept just one clean sheet in their last 22 league games at home.
Also, they have won just one of their last 11 league games against Chelsea, (D2, L8), with that sole win coming in February 2023.
As for Chelsea, they will feel confident in their chances when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
It is ironic because Chelsea were the ones expected to be inconsistent this season after appointing Enzo Maresca in the summer.
But the team has settled well under the Italian, playing beautiful and expansive football. Chelsea did start the season with a 2-0 defeat at home to Man City, but since then they have only lost to Liverpool in the league at Anfield.
The Blues have won eight out of their 14 league matches this season and currently sit third on the table, seven points behind leaders Liverpool.
They come into this clash on the back of emphatic victories over Aston Villa and Southampton, respectively.
But while Chelsea have had no trouble seeing off teams below them, they have struggled in the games against their big six rivals.
Maresca’s men are winless in games against the big six this season, losing to Man City and Liverpool before playing a draw against Man Utd and Arsenal.
However, they can change that by picking up a win at Spurs this weekend. The omens look good for them as they have won eight of their last 11 league games against the Lily Whites.
Tottenham and Chelsea team news
Spurs will be without Ben Davies for the encounter after picking up a hamstring injury against Bournemouth. Micky van de Ven is still out but Cristian Romero could return from a toe injury.
Rodrigo Bentancur is still suspended while Guglielmo Vicario (ankle), Richarlison (hamstring), Mikey Moore (illness) and Wilson Odober will all miss the game.
Meanwhile, Chelsea also have injury problems of theirs. The Blues will be without Wesley Fofana and Reece James, but that’s just it for Maresca.
