How to Bet on Tennis - Betting Guides, Tips & Markets

Tennis is one of the most-watched sports in the world, which is why it is popular in the betting market.

Betting on Tennis can be tricky, especially if you are unfamiliar with the sport. Unlike most sports, Tennis is an individual game, meaning you have to understand the betting options available before you place your bets.

In this article, we will explain the betting options available in Tennis. But before we get into it, we need to explain the game of Tennis.

Tennis Associations and gameplay

As stated earlier, Tennis is an individual sport, where two players compete against each other on a court divided by a net.

It is played almost throughout the year. The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Women's Tennis Association (WTA) are the sport's highest level.

These two associations have their tournaments, which start from the 250 events to the Masters 1000s. However, the Grand Slams, organised by the ITF (International Tennis Federation) are the biggest events in Tennis.

For WTA and ATP events, tennis matches are best of three sets, while grand slams are best of five for men and three for women.

To win a set, a player must win at least six individual games, but the margin must be by at least two games. However, a tie-break is needed if both players are tied at 6-6. Typically, a player wins a tie-breaker when he gets to seven and wins by at least a two-point margin.

However, this only applies for the first four sets in Grand Slams, with the final set tie-breaker going all the way to 10 points.

A game is from 0-40, with each point starting at 15. To win a game, a player must at least win by a two-point margin.

They go to a deuce if scores are tied at 40-40. A player must still win two points to win a game when scores are tied at 40-40.

A player serves for the entire game, with the other receiving. They alternate serves for each game. Should a player that is receiving win a game, that’s a break of serve.

Tennis Major Events

Australian Open - This is the first grand slam of the year, and it takes place in Australia in January every year. It is played on a hard-court

French Open- Also known as Roland Garros. The second event of the year takes place on the red dirt of Paris. It is a clay court event between May and June every year.

Wimbledon - This is tennis' most prestigious event. It happens every summer (June) in London on grass. It is the oldest tennis event in the world and the only one with a dress code for players (All White)

US Open - The final grand slam event of the year. Taking place in Flushing Meadows, New York, The US OPEN is the only Grand Slam not affected by the cancellation of World War I and World War II or interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

NB: All Grand Slam tournaments feature both the men's and women’s players.

Most Popular Tennis betting options and markets

Now that you understand Tennis rules, these are some betting options available.

Moneyline- This is simply betting on the winner, like in any other sport. However, unlike football (soccer) and a few team sports, Tennis has no draw. This option is best for you, especially if you are a beginner.

Overs- As the word implies, overs mean the number of games or sets that will be played. Example: You can bet on Over 8.5 games in the first set, meaning at least nine games will be played.

You can also bet on the total number of games. E.g.: Carlos Alcaraz vs Novak Djokovic: Over 17.5 games or Over 27.5, depending on the event.

You can also bet on overs for individual players. For Example, you can bet on Rafael Nadal to win over 18.5 games depending on the number of sets.

Set Betting: Set betting is when a bettor bets on a player to win a specific number of sets or a particular set.

Eg: A bettor could bet on Novak Djokovic to win the first set against Carlos Alcaraz. Another bettor could bet on Alcaraz to win a set in the same game.

Meanwhile, you can also predict the correct set score. E.g., If it's a best of three sets, you can bet on 2-0 or 2-1. If it's a best of five sets, you can bet on 3-0, 3-1, 3-2.

Handicap: Handicap is not different from what is obtainable in football. It means you are betting on a player's performance based on his quality.

E.G: If Novak Djokovic has been given 1.06 to beat Alex Di Minaur. You can give Djokovic a four-game handicap, meaning you expect Djokovic to win four more games than Di Minaur.

It is important to note that the favourites are always given a negative handicap while the underdogs are given a positive handicap.

Live Betting: Live Betting is simply betting on a live tennis match.

Outrights- Outrights are the same as football (Soccer). It simply means betting on who will win the title in a future event.

E.G.; With the upcoming French Open, you can bet on Alcaraz to win the event, even before the draw.
