Weekend Review: Barca’s El-Clasico, Topuria mixed night as Ferrari reigns again

It was a mixed night for Ilia Topuria as Barcelona claimed a major scalp in the first El-Clasico of the new season.

New week, new stories to tell from the weekend. Last weekend will go down as one of the best in sports this year.

It was a weekend that lived up to expectations as fans were glued to their seats due to non-stop drama.

Every major race, football match and fight delivered all the excitement you could want as a massive fan.

It was a weekend that had it all and we are here to break it down for you. With that said, let’s take a look at the biggest talking points from last weekend in sports.

Barcelona dominate El-Clasico

The biggest football game last weekend took place at Santiago Bernabeu as Real Madrid hosted Barcelona in the first El-Clasico of the season.

Both teams went into the game in good form after an impressive win in their Champions League games last week.

Madrid were looking to draw level with their rivals, while Barca were seeking to end the champions' 42-game unbeaten run in the league.

Los Blancos went into the game as the slight favourite but the match turned out to be a nightmare for them as Barcelona obliterated them.

Madrid did start well dominating most parts of the first half, although they could not make their dominance count.

Their failure to take advantage of their first half dominance came back to haunt them as Barcelona took control of the second half by scoring four goals.

The Catalan giants took the lead through Robert Lewandowski after he was played through brilliantly by Marc Casado.

One became two moments later as Lewandowski scored his second of the game, courtesy of a fantastic header from Alejandro Balde.

Although Real Madrid tried to find their way back, it was Barcelona who added a third through their generational youngster, Lamine Yamal.

Madrid’s misery was compounded when Raphinha scored Barca’s fourth, completing a dominant win for the Catalans.

Topuria knocks out Holloway

On the same night Barcelona handed Madrid a football lesson, Ilia Topuria also delivered a fighting masterclass as he stopped Max Holloway to retain his UFC featherweight title.

Topuria made his first title defence against Holloway having won the belt after beating Alexander Volkanovski.

The Spaniard, who was 15-0 in his fights and 7-0 in the UFC, fought a perfect fight to knock out Holloway, who had never been knocked out in his UFC career before Saturday.

Both fighters brought their A-level but it was Pouria who took the initiative in the third round of the fight.

The unbeaten Spaniard landed some clean shots which left Holloway wobbled before landing a blow that left him flat.

It was indeed a performance of a lifetime from Topuria, but it was also a mixed night for him as his darling Madrid lost to Barcelona.

Ferrari claims back-to-back wins

Ferrari’s recent success continued over the weekend after they won the Mexican Grand Prix to move up to second in the constructor’s standings.

The most successful team in Formula 1 history backed up their 1-2 finish at the US Grand Prix with another two podium appearances in Mexico.

Carlos Sainz, who will leave the team at the end of the year, won the race having claimed pole in qualification.

Sainz started well but lost the lead to championship leader Max Verstappen. However, the Spaniard regained control after a safety car was brought out for an incident involving Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon and Yuki Tsunoda.

Meanwhile, Lando Norris finished second while last week’s race winner Charles Leclerc finished third.
