Housebets take a look at some of the major stories of last weekend
Ferrari reigns in Monza
It was a back-to-back success for Ferrari in Monza as Charles Leclerc drove a brilliant race to take home the victory for the most successful team in Formula 1 history.
Ferrari knew they had to be perfect after McLaren’s Lance Stroll and Oscar Piastri took 1-2 in qualifying.
The McLaren drivers started well, with Norris going out in P1 before Piastri moved past him later in the lap.
Piastri was in the lead for most of the race and looked on course to win McLaren consecutive races.
However, Ferrari made a calculated decision to try a one-stop instead of the two-stop all other teams, including McLaren, took.
This allowed Leclerc and his teammate Carlos Sainz to take the lead. However, as the race went on, Sainz could not hold off Piastri and Norris.
But Leclerc was able to keep his position, holding off the two McLaren drivers to win a remarkable race.
Liverpool reign in Man Utd’s Home
The biggest clash of the weekend in Europe’s top leagues took place at Old Trafford as Manchester United hosted Liverpool in a Premier League clash.
The encounter was an opportunity for Erik Ten Hag’s men to prove critics wrong after they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brighton.
However, their performance only armed their critics and piled more pressure on Ten Hag after they suffered a 3-0 defeat.
Liverpool were heads and shoulders above their rivals and could have even scored more if they had been more clinical.
Arne Slot, in his first trip to Old Trafford as Liverpool boss, watched his side dominate from start to finish.
Liverpool showed their intent from the start and thought they had the lead when Trent Alexander-Arnold had the ball over the goal line, but the goal was chalked off.
However, destiny delayed is not destiny denied as Liverpool took the lead moments later through Luis Diaz, who headed home from close range from a Mohamed Salah cross.
It was all Liverpool from that moment on as Diaz scored his second with a superb finish to double Liverpool’s advantage.
Slot’s men went into the break with a two-goal lead but picked up from where they left off in the second as Salah scored the third.
Tiafoe sends Djokovic’s conqueror out
This year’s US Open will live long forever in fans’ memories after Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic were knocked out in back-back-back nights.
Alcaraz suffered a straight sets defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp while Djokovic lost to Alexei Popyrin.
However, both players could not back their all-conquering victories as they suffered losses to Jack Draper and Francis Tiafoe respectively.
Tiafoe reached the quarter-finals again after beating Popyprin in four sets. The American will not feel confident in his chances with Alcaraz and Djokovic out.
