Liverpool refused to take their foot off the gas as Manchester City secured an important win for the first time in a while.
It is Liverpool’s world and all other Premier League are just living in it. This was the case over the weekend as Premier League football took centre stage.
With almost all the leagues in Europe currently on a break due to the festive celebration, the Premier League is one of the few leagues that kept fans entertained during the holidays.
Following the Boxing Day fixtures, matchweek 19 took centre stage on Sunday, with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur in action.
It was indeed a day of ups and downs for some of the clubs. Forest moved up to second on the table after a 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park, while Spurs were held to a 2-2 at home by Wolves.
However, the two biggest games of the day were City’s trip to Leicester and Liverpool’s clash at West Ham.
City earn rare win
Before this moment, it would have been unfathomable to say Man City earned a rare win in their Premier League game because all they do is win- in DJ Khaled’s voice.
However, that was their story on Sunday as a 2-0 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium as Pep Guardiola’s men secured a rare victory.
It has been a disastrous season for the Cityzens, watching their Premier League title defence go up in flames. Coming into the game against the Foxes, City were in dire need of a win, having won just one of their previous 13 league games - losing nine.
However, the win against Leicester gave them their second win in ten league games and it has never been more important. Although they are currently 14 points behind leaders, Liverpool, having played a game more, the win against Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s men moved them up to fifth place on the table, four points behind Chelsea, who play Ipswich Town on Monday.
City started well, taking the lead in the 14th minute through Savinho, who finally scored his first goal of the season for the Champions.
But it was not smooth sailing for Guardiola’s men as Leicester had a few chances to pull level, but Jamie Vardy could not convert.
City would eventually put the game beyond Everton as Erling Haaland scored in the 74th minute for his 14th goal of the season.
Liverpool ride on at the top
It would take a monumental effort and an all-time collapse to stop Liverpool from winning the Premier League this season with the way the Reds are operating right now.
The Reds moved eight points clear at the top after a 5-0 thrashing of West Ham in their clash on Sunday evening. Arne Slot’s men just had too much for the Hammers, who could not contain Liverpool’s attackers.
Luis Diaz put Liverpool ahead with a beautiful finish before Cody Gakpo doubled their advantage moments later. Mo Salah then made it three in the 44th minute, his 30th goal contribution in 18 league games this season.
Trent Alexander-Arnold's deflected effort made it four before Diogo Jota added the icing on the cake with the fifth goal.
It was another statement win from Slot’s men, who once again showed that they would not put their foot off the gas despite having a healthy lead at the top.
