It was a weekend to remember for Coco Gauff after she made women’s tennis history in Saudi Arabia.
It was a weekend to remember for Coco Gauff after she made women’s tennis history in Saudi Arabia.
It’s another new week and another time to review some of the top moments that went down in the world of sports.
Last weekend was a quiet one but there were still a few events that stood out. The action continued in Europe’s domestic leagues as the last round of matches took place before the year’s final international break.
There were a few matches that grabbed the headlines, including Ruben Amorim’s final game as Sporting Lisbon's manager before taking charge at Manchester United this week.
It looked like Amorim would leave Sporting on a losing note as his side went down 2-0 at Braga on Sunday night.
But a spirited comeback from his players in the second half secured a 4-2 win for Amorim in his final match.
Amorim’s farewell game was not the top football story of the weekend, though. We will look at that later in the article. Away from football, the NBA and the NFL also kept fans glued to their seats over the weekend.
With that said, let’s take a look at some of the biggest news from the world of sports last weekend.
Coco Gauff wins WTA Finals
The WTA Finals final took place on Saturday, with Coco Gauff taking on Zheng Qinwen in the showpiece.
Gauff had beaten World no. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final, while Zheng beat Barbora Krejčíková at the same stage.
The final indeed lived up to expectations, with Gauff coming back to claim a thrilling three-set victory.
Zheng started the first set on fire, breaking to love for 5-3. Although Gauff had her chances to break in the first set, the American could not convert her break points.
Her inability to convert five break points came back to haunt her in the opener as Zheng served out the opening set.
The second set appeared to be heading in the same direction as Zheng broke to go 3-1 up and take control.
However, Gauff found resilience, breaking three times in a row before going on to send the match into a decider.
The third set mirrored the second set as Gauff once again had to come back from a break down to put the match back on serve.
Zheng, however, broke again and had the chance to serve out the match at 5-4. Yet again, Gauff refused to give up, breaking to level the match 5-5.
Both players went on to hold serve, with the match going into a tie-break decider. The tie-break turned out to be a one-sided affair as Gauff stormed to a 6-0 lead before serving out a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(2) win.
It was indeed the perfect end for the 20-year-old American, who failed to win a grand slam this year and received criticism for her performances.
Gauff’s win in Saudi Arabia also saw her win the largest payout ever for a women's tennis event, winning $4.805 million in prize money.
Chelsea and Arsenal share spoils
Almost every weekend, we witness at least one big match in the Premier League. Last week was no different as Chelsea hosted Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
Both teams were hoping to stay in touch with the teams at the top, especially Arsenal who came into the game ten points behind leaders Liverpool.
The Gunners knew they could not afford to lose the game going into the clash. As for Chelsea, they were hoping to get a first win against a big six rival and strengthen their quest for a top four finish.
However, the first half of the match lacked excitement as there was no urgency in their play despite the presence of some quality players on the pitch.
The second half was no different, although Arsenal did take the lead through Gabriel Martinelli, who fired home at the near post following a brilliant ball from Martin Odegaard.
However, the Gunners’ lead did not last long as Pedro Neto scored his first goal for Chelsea to salvage a point for Maresca’s men.
